Nestled at the southern end of Lake Como, just 40 km north of Milan and a short distance from the Swiss border, Como combines elegant lakeside scenery with history, culture and a relaxed Italian lifestyle. Staying at Il Cortiletto means being perfectly positioned between Como and Cernobbio, with ferry connections, lakeside walks, restaurants and some of the area’s most beautiful attractions all within easy reach.
The city is closely linked to Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the electric battery, whose legacy is still visible throughout Como. At the same time, Como is internationally known for its long tradition in silk production, elegant architecture and vibrant waterfront atmosphere.
Museums and Culture
Tempio Voltiano
Located on the lakefront near the football stadium and the Monumento ai Caduti, the Tempio Voltiano is dedicated to Alessandro Volta and showcases scientific instruments, documents and exhibitions related to his inventions and life.
Archaeological Museum
Housed inside Palazzo Giovio in the historic centre, the museum tells the story of Como from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. The collection includes Roman artefacts, bronze sculptures, ancient jewellery and Egyptian and Greek findings discovered in the area.
Porta Pretoria Romana
Once the main entrance to Como during Roman times, Porta Pretoria was rediscovered in 1914 and remains one of the city’s most fascinating archaeological sites. Visits are possible upon reservation through the Archaeological Museum.
Museo Giuseppe Garibaldi
Dedicated to the Italian Risorgimento and modern Italian history, the museum contains historical objects, documents and exhibitions connected to Giuseppe Garibaldi and the unification of Italy.
Silk Museum
Como’s silk tradition has shaped the city for centuries. The Silk Museum explores the history of textile production through antique machinery, fabrics and interactive exhibits. It also hosts cultural events and temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
Experiences Around Como
Lakefront Walks
One of the most beautiful experiences in Como is simply walking along the lakeside promenade. From Villa Olmo to Cernobbio, the route offers spectacular scenery, elegant villas, gardens and views across the lake.
Villa Olmo
This historic neoclassical villa is surrounded by large public gardens and sits directly on the waterfront. During the summer months the nearby lido is also open for swimming and relaxing by the lake.
Brunate Funicular
The historic funicular railway connects Como with the hilltop village of Brunate in just a few minutes. From there you can admire panoramic views over Lake Como and, if the weather is clear, even the Alps. More adventurous visitors can continue to the Volta Lighthouse.
Cernobbio
Elegant yet relaxed, Cernobbio is one of the most charming towns on Lake Como. Its lakeside promenade, cafés and historic villas make it perfect for an afternoon walk. Villa Erba regularly hosts exhibitions and international events, while Villa d’Este remains one of the lake’s most iconic luxury hotels.
Como 1907 Football Club
The Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia enjoys one of the most unique locations in European football, directly beside the lake. Match tickets for Como 1907 can often be purchased online or directly at the stadium on game days.
Seaplane Flights
Near the Tempio Voltiano you will find the Aero Club Como, one of the oldest seaplane clubs in the world. Scenic flights over the lake are available and offer unforgettable aerial views of the surrounding villages and mountains.
